Conservatives need to recognize that the CBC can be a powerful tool for promoting the values that are important to them: Canadian values

. For example, the CBC could promote programming that values entrepreneurship, free enterprise and self-reliance. The CBC can also promote programming that celebrates Canadian history and its heroes. Conservatives should engage with the CBC and work to ensure that its programming reflects these values.

Conservatives must recognize that promoting conservative values does not simply mean rejecting anything new or different. Instead, they need to embrace the diversity of Canadian culture and work to shape it in a way that reflects their values. This should certainly include new Canadians, who Conservatives should work to integrate into our shared cultural identity.Article content

To build a strong, conservative culture, conservatives must think beyond the practicalities of the economy and begin to think about the intangibles that contribute to our nation’s health. This means actively participating in the cultural sphere, engaging with the arts and creating a community that values the arts and humanities. It means fostering a sense of community that encompasses a shared history and a shared set of values.

The key to building a strong, conservative culture is to reject the toxic and unproductive “us versus them” paradigm. We must recognize that there are real differences between us, but we must also understand that these differences can be a source of strength. We must learn to appreciate the diversity of perspectives and ideas within our country and work to build a community that values these differences. In doing so, we can build a tolerant culture that is strong and conservative.

Culture matters as much as economic policy, and a party that ignores this reality does so at its peril. The argument around the CBC and its programming is already toxic; Conservatives should not waste an opportunity to reshape it into an institution that Canadians can be proud of.
