MacDonald says that the extreme mood shifts brought on by bipolar can be embarrassing for sufferers and their families. “People can be manic — during which they have extreme mood swings — but they can also have depression.” She also says the hardest thing for families and people with bipolar disorder is getting the help they need. “People on a journey with bipolar often don’t know they have changed,” says MacDonald. “But their families do.”Article content continued
“So many people suffer in silence,” she says, “and don’t get the help they need,” suggesting that if a person refuses help, or does not want to admit they have a problem, friends and family members should “reach out in an empathetic way,” asking them if they’re feeling sad and checking in frequently about their emotional state.
