The running community in Kansas is coming together in the weeks following the sudden death of a runner who was struck and killed by lightning during a race.

However, as big of an impact Stanley had on his family and his work, he also left a lasting impression on those in the Kansas running community.

“Thomas was the guy going out of his way after a race to talk to the race timers and volunteers,” said Jacob Wayman, a friend and running partner of Stanley’s. The two met in a prayer group three years ago. “He was the sole provider for three kids under 6, and he took care of himself through running for them and by giving back to people. He pushed himself, and you never heard him complain about any of it.”Together, the two completed their first marathon together at thein Wichita, Kansas in 2010.

“Thomas was a close friend of mine,” Wayman said. “We knew we needed to work on something to remember him, so we reached out to the race and they wanted to help.” For this Sunday’s race, there will be a few ways to remember Stanley throughout the day. At the 5K, the Wichita Sports Commission, which hosts the event, will hand out cowbells with “I run for Thomas” stamped on them. Also, the race will donate $10 per registration for any race to the Stanley’s Children Fund when you use the code“Thomas was an encourager, so it will be more of a moment of celebration and cheering for him,” Wayman said.

“Thomas very much didn’t want the light shining on him ever,” Wayman said. “He was always invested in other people, but but as you can see, his actions in his life had an impact, and that is now being seen globally.”There is also a plan for a memorial race in the works. No official date has been set, but the goal is for this fall.
