User data from people who ordered pods from its website is being passed to a political PR agency to help fight state regulations.

Last week, I received a friendly-yet-professional email from a publicity firm called Locust Street saying they were contracted by e-cigarette startup Juul. This would be normal — I get a lot of pitches from PR agents because I’m a reporter. But it wasn’t sent to me as a reporter; it was sent to me because, uh, I’m a customer of the juul.com website. My name is [redacted] and I am an Outreach Specialist with Locust Street Community Solutions.

Please feel free to give me a call back at [redacted] or reply to this email if you'd like to share your story! It’s rare, but not unheard of, for a company to reach out to customers to find personal testimonials for advertising campaigns. I’ve never had someone call me up and ask me to participate in an advertisement based on an order I placed online, but certainly this thing happens. However, because I view my Juuling as a sort of shameful addiction, it felt unnerving to be put on blast by a publicist about it.

A representative for Juul pointed out that in their website’s privacy policy says the company may give your info to their vendors or contractors, and that it’s mandatory to accept the privacy policy before ordering. In other words —Juul very much would like you to know that Juul products are made to help adult smokers quit cigarettes, and certainly not a fun awesome delicious vapey stick that makes teens look cool and badass.
