Juul is poised to move forward with a plan to keep e-cigarettes in San Francisco stores
. The Coalition for Reasonable Vaping Regulation—of which Juul is a member and to which it has contributed $500,000—then campaigned to collect the 9,500 signatures needed to get the measure on the ballot. Having secured them before the July 8 deadline, the group can make the proposition a part of the November election. Other options, like a March vote, are also under consideration, Kwong said.
“This is truly a Trojan horse,” Myers says. “Cigarette manufacturers have argued that the only thing governments should do is restrict the age of sale to minors for 50 years. The evidence has shown that the government has to do much more to protect kids from the marketing and youth-appealing products they make.”
The Juul spokesman said the ballot measure would not “affect or weaken” current laws, like the ban on flavored vaping products. But Myers is not so sure, contending that “the language of the referendum is inconsistent with [Juul’s] rhetoric.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who co-wrote the e-cigarette ban, declined to comment on Juul’s initiative, but encouraged San Franciscans to “look closely at the ballot measure to see if it is what it says it is, or if it's something else.” Herrera said he was focused on San Francisco’s measure, which will head to Mayor London Breed’s office for a final signature.
