Justin Trudeau will be remembered for his ‘leadership’ — not ‘the trash and the rumours,’ Brian Mulroney says via torontostar
OTTAWA — It wasn’t the flattering words, but the bitter context, that made Brian Mulroney’s introduction of Justin Trudeau on Monday night an extraordinary political moment.
In his remarks, Mulroney never uttered the name of the current Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre,, as he styles himself a prime minister in waiting. Historians, he said, will reflect positively on Trudeau’s “remarkable” handling of the pandemic, deft renegotiation of the NAFTA free trade pact, and steadfast support of Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
“I did free trade with Ronald Reagan. And then I did NAFTA with George Bush- Herbert Walker . And let me tell you, there’s one hell of a difference between negotiating with those two gentlemen and negotiating with our friend, President Trump. Trump was out to sabotage Canada in many important ways. And it took a vision and a steady hand,” Mulroney said, to land a deal., reflected on how Trudeau “invited me in as an adviser to his cabinet.
“Trump says, ‘Well, I don’t care who wins,’” Mulroney said. “Well, I care who wins and the Prime Minister cares and it has to be Ukrainians,” he said, to applause. After months of tense political debate in Ottawa which saw Poilievre accuse Trudeau of working in the interests of China, of covering up Chinese meddling in elections, of being too “woke,” and of coddling convicted murderer and rapist Paul Bernardo, Trudeau seemed grateful, thanking Mulroney for his “generous” introduction.
