The Bears' offense has been criticized all offseason, but Justin Fields looks ready to excel in the regular season. jfmckessy breaks down Fields' strong performance vs. Cleveland and what to expect when games count for real. FrontOffice33 | DaBears
is a big step back from their usual pass-rush. That doesn’t mean Chicago deserves less credit for playing well against backups. A first-team offense is supposed to be dominant if they’re playing against a bunch of second- and third-stringers, and even in those situations, the players still have to play well to look dominant.
New offensive coordinator Luke Getsy deserves some credit for Fields’ strong performance with the various looks he drew up for the quarterback throughout the game. Where Matt Nagy’s offense last year wasn’t well-tailored to Fields’ strengths as a mobile quarterback, Getsy’s offense already looks like a better fit. There’s more pre-snap motion, bootlegs, play-action, RPOs, and screens, and the second-year quarterback is benefitting from it all.
Fields, to his credit, played very well. As one might expect with such an impressive stat line, his performance on film looked great too. Even with his mobility on display, Fields wasn’t afraid to prioritize the pass; there weren’t many occasions in which he bailed early, tucking the ball and taking off with his legs.
On a 3rd-and-9 play early in the second quarter, Fields faced some quick pressure from his left side that forced him to scramble out of the pocket. After avoiding a sack by outrunning the defender, Fields could have taken off running to try and scramble for a few extra yards anda first down. Instead, he faked out the Browns’ secondary defenders with his eyes as he made it back to the line of scrimmage then fired a quick dart to his receiver on the sideline for a first down.
My favorite play from yesterday was Justin Fields extending the play with his feet and hitting Dante Pettis along the sideline for a first down.
