Two-time Olympian Heather Bansley and partner Sophie Bukovec is competing at the FIVB Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event, a four-day, 32-team tournament in downtown Halifax. - Canadian Olympic CommitteeSaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for September 22, 2023 | SaltWireAmidst the hustle and bustle of downtown Halifax sits a sandy oasis on an empty parking lot.

After a fifth-place finish with partner Sarah Pavan at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and then placing fifth again with Brandie Wilkerson at the COVID-delayed Tokyo Games five years later, Bansley decided to call it quits in March 2022. She remained in the sport by taking a full-time coaching position with Volleyball Canada.

The Chronicle Herald spoke to Bansley about her short-lived retirement, Olympic aspirations and being back in Halifax.“I missed parts of being an athlete. I love practice. I love the opportunity to show up every day for training and work on something to help better yourself and improve your game. I like the physical demands of the job and being physically active every day. And, of course, the competitiveness. There’s nothing like being an athlete.

When you returned to the sand court, did you find it took some time to get back to that level of competitiveness that you were used to or was it like riding a bike?“It was a little bit of both. It was nice to have that perspective, to step away from the sport and allow me to appreciate it again. Physically, I had to get back into shape. But I was lucky enough that I was still around the sport with coaching and being involved.
