A coroner’s inquest into the shooting death of a man at the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo in 2018 has wrapped up, with the jury providing two recommendations.
On May 8, 2018, 39-year-old Jerry Smallwood was driving off the ferry in Nanaimo when he was boxed in by undercover RCMP vehicles who were investigating him for a violent carjacking in Penticton.
The first recommendation is that advanced care paramedics be called whenever there are “planned apprehensions where the subject may be armed,” instead of primary care paramedics.have an additional 18 to 24 months of training compared to primary care paramedics, including managing critically injured patients.
The second recommendation is for police to “expedite regional based full-time ERT teams , including on Vancouver Island, and continue to supplement the teams with ERT-trained part-time members.”
