Luis Serrano-Delgado's attorney, Brian Perry, said he is not ready to give up on the homicide case against his client, who was convicted in the killing of Jeremanuel Negon-Quiles.
, a jury on Thursday found that a 22-year-old man participated in the killing of Jeremanuel Negron-Quiles in 2018 over a $20 drug debt., 22, who was found shot in the back July 6, 2018 near South 14th and Kittatinny streets. Senior Deputy District Attorney Amy Schwarzl partnered with Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Zawisky to prosecute Luis Serrano-Delgado, who was 18 at the time of the crime.
“We tried to work it out,” Perry said. “The District Attorney offered a very reasonable plea deal prior to the trial, but my client rejected it.”Working against his client was clear video surveillance footage showing Serrano-Delgado leaving his vehicle and tucking what appeared to be a firearm into his waistband before the killing. That was the most incriminating evidence, according to Schwarzl.
Perry believed there were far too many holes in the Commonwealth’s case for a jury to find guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Among them: there were no eyewitnesses and the case was primarily based on Serrano-Delgado’s own words, Perry said. “In order to find him guilty, that means they found he was lying on the stand,” Schwarzl said. “If they really believed [what he said], they would not have found him guilty.”
