The man now faces a minimum of 30 years in prison.
On November 13, 2021 at 9:19 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 914 North Main Street for a report of a shooting, according to a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. When they arrived, they found 41-year-old Somers Point resident Ivan Smith lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Smith died at the scene, authorities said.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage and talked to a number of witnesses and learned that a man, later identified as Jermaine Wharton, 33, of Pleasantville, had unsuccessfully tried to break into a another person’s car and then approached Smith and his car, the office said. Shortly thereafter there was a gunshot and Smith was found dead.
