A Chicago-bound flight had to turn around to Luxembourg Airport and make an emergency landing after the plane was unable to retract its landing gear upon takeoff Sunday evening.
The Cargolux Airlines Boeing 747 plane flew for 52 minutes, dumping fuel over Luxembourg and Belgium so it could get under its maximum landing weight before attempting to touchdown,The hair-raising ordeal continued on the ground when the plane’s right body landing gear snapped and detached from the jet as it tried to touch back down at Luxembourg Airport, according to video footage and a statement from Cargolux.
The Luxembourgian flag carrier cargo airline said the plane “came to a controlled stop and was attended to by the emergency services.”It was unclear when or if the plane would be cleared to return to service.
