Judge rejects consecutive sentences for Marpole double\u002Dmurderer

First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility for 25 years but a law passed by Parliament in 2011 allows the prosecution to seek consecutive periods of parole eligibility in cases of multiple murders.

In a ruling released Tuesday, the judge said that neither the law that allows consecutive sentences nor prior court rulings support the Crown argument. Regarding the issue of deterring Kam from committing any further crimes, the judge said that a single life sentence was sufficient. Court heard that Kam forced his way into the victim’s home and attacked and killed the couple with a knife and a hatchet. He dragged Mah-Jones’ body into the kitchen where he slit her throat and then, hearing her husband arrive at the back of the house, hid himself before attacking Jones, inflicting more than 100 sharp-force wounds during a prolonged assault.
