A federal judge has refused a request to temporarily stop a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for Washington state employees and emergency responders.
Aug. 9 requiring state executive branch employees, public and private health care workers, and most public safety employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by October 18.
Nineteen workers filed a lawsuit earlier this month seeking a temporary restraining order, saying Inslee’s proclamation violated their civil rights and that people who deserved medical and religious exemptions had been denied them. Named as defendants were Inslee, Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, state patrol Chief John Batiste and others.reported U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Rice denied the motion on Monday.
State officials reported that more than 1,800 state workers had been fired or resigned because of the mandate. About 3% of the state’s 63,000 employees covered by the mandate have left the job, The Associated Press said, citing the governor’s Office of Financial Management. Inslee later announced a vaccine requirement for employees working in K-12 schools, childcare and early learning, and higher educationOct. 11 saying more than 90% of employees affected by the vaccine mandate have been vaccinated.
