Herb Wesson, a former termed-out Los Angeles City Councilman, will not be allowed to fill the council’s 10th district seat until March 17 at the earliest, despite being appointed by the City Council and sworn in earlier this week, according to representatives of plaintiffs in a lawsuit aimed at halting the appointment.
“For months one of Mark Ridley-Thomas’ primary concerns has been that Nury Martinez and City Council have consistently taken action without listening to the voters of District 10,” Ridley-Thomas attorney Michael Proctor said in a statement. “Today, thankfully, someone — the court system — finally listened to their concerns. The lesson to District 10 voters? If you want to be counted, you need to fight for it.
The 10th district seat has been vacant for the last four months, since late October. Constituents have repeatedly called for a voting representative to fill the seat, pointing to important decisions taking place around redistricting last fall, and now potentially the city budgeting deliberations, which begin in April.
Wesson was sworn in by the City Clerk on Tuesday, but he was absent from the City Council meeting on Wednesday.
