We spoke with JoyRide writers, producers, and creators teresahsiao & Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (cherrycheva) about the incredible cast of their new film and the importance of bringing gender representation to the screen:
Joy Ride follows Audrey on a business trip to Asia during which she must enlist the help of her friends Lol , Kat , and Deadeye . Things do not go according to plan at all, and the friends and thrust into an epic, off-the-rails, wild, and crazy adventure.
Teresa Hsiao & Cherry Chevapravatdumrong on Joy Ride Screen Rant: Joy Ride is such a fun movie. I'd love to know where the inspiration for it came from. We had on set writers and so between all of us, it was like the joke tent. We definitely had different versions of many of the jokes spots, because sometimes you don't know what's going to work and be the funniest until you try it out. We wanted to make sure that we had all of those possibilities to try out when we were in the editing process later on. Cherry Chevapravatdumrong: They're all so funny. Our on set joke team literally comprised of everyone.
Teresa Hsiao: Yeah, her big mouth thing was definitely something she brought into the audition. And we were like, "Wow." Teresa Hsiao: We are very lucky to have two Broadway stars to be able to also just hone in on that action. I mean, we knew from the very beginning that we wanted to have a musical sequence. That we want to have this big moment, and so getting to that point was definitely a little bit of a challenge in terms of what song is it going to be? What are we going to do? how's it going to look? But it all came together in this messy, chaotic, great way.
Screen Rant: One thing I really love about this is that we have plenty of male-led movies like this, but now we have female and non-binary characters that are able to get raunchy.
