Opinion: It should follow the example of B.C.’s Rental Protection Fund.
With its emphasis on home ownership while neglecting the rapid loss of affordable rental units, the budget failed to address the needs of renters, who are at growing risk of being in unaffordable, overcrowded, uninhabitable homes, or homeless if governments continue with the status quo.
One solution is a federally supported property acquisition strategy. It need only look to B.C.’s new non-profit managed Rental Protection Fund for a model. This strategy would support the transfer of existing affordable rental housing at risk of loss from the private market because of speculative rent increases, renovation, and/or redevelopment into the hands of new non-profit owners interested in maximizing affordability, not profit.
