Jose Bautista to sign one-day contract to retire a Blue Jay

With that in mind, the slugging superstar — and one of the most popular players in club history — has agreed to sign a one-day contract with the team that allows him to retire as a Jay.Bautista will sign the contract on Friday afternoon in advance of a ceremony on Saturday at the Rogers Centre in which his name will be placed on the Jays Level of Excellence, enshrining his as one of the greats in franchise history.

The symbolic signing of the one-day deal gives the Jays and the team’s fans across the country an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of a remarkable 10-year career Bautista had in Toronto. “There aren’t many names as synonymous with Blue Jays baseball as Jose Bautista and it is our great honour that he will officially retire in a Blue Jays jersey,” team president Mark Shapiro said in a statement.Article contentThe accomplishments of Bautista are many. From 2010 to 2015, he hit more home runs than any player in the league, captured three Silver Slugger Awards and appeared in six consecutive MLB All Star games.

Bautista’s status as a fan favourite was cemented as a part of those great Jays teams that brought the Jays to the post season for the first time in 22 years. And during Game 5 of the 2015 ALDS against the Texas Rangers, Bautista’s seventh-inning three-run homer and subsequent bat flip rocked the Rogers Centre like never before.

Bautista’s legacy will be celebrated during the Level of Excellence ceremony prior to Saturday’s 3:07 p.m. game against the Chicago Cubs.
