Right-handed pitcher Jordan Romano is returning to the Toronto Blue Jays after agreeing to a three-year, US$33 million deal last week. The Blue Jays are expected to utilize Hoffman as their closer. Hoffman achieved his first All-Star selection last season with a 3-3 record, a 2.17 ERA, and 10 saves. The 6-foot-5 pitcher posted impressive numbers, striking out 89 batters while walking only 16 in 66 1/3 innings. His opponents batted just .197 against him, and he maintained a stellar 0.96 WHIP.
Though Hoffman confirmed undergoing physical examinations with both the Blue Jays and another unnamed team (later revealed to be the Atlanta Braves and the Baltimore Orioles), he expressed surprise at the MRI results flagged by the medical staffs. He refuted any concerns about his health, stating, 'I feel great. All the flagged physical stuff was as big a surprise to me as anybody. You can check my track record over the past few seasons. I've been as healthy as anybody. It's a non-issue for me.' He emphasized his comfort with the Blue Jays, saying, 'It's something that they wanted to bring up. The Blue Jays see me for what I am. I'd rather be in a place like that anyway.' Hoffman was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in 2014 but was traded to Colorado in 2015. He has since played for the Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies. Over his nine-year MLB career, Hoffman has a 23-26 record with a 4.82 ERA in 256 games, including 50 starts. His fastball reaches around 97 mph, and he also utilizes a splitter, slider, and sinker. Hoffman credits recent mechanical adjustments with improving his performance over the last four seasons. He shared, 'Once I shed those mechanical chains a little bit, I feel like everything got a lot cleaner. The ball started coming out better, more like what I remembered it should look like. Now I feel like I've really found the arsenal that I want to roll with. It's a pitch mix that I'm really confident in.' He has a history of minor injuries, including a stint on the injured list in 2022 with a right forearm strain and in 2021 with a sore right shoulder. Despite these setbacks, Hoffman performed admirably in the 2023 NLCS for the Philadelphia Phillies, pitching six scoreless innings across five appearances.Hoffman's contract with the Blue Jays includes a $5 million signing bonus, salaries of $6 million in the first year, and $11 million in each of the following two seasons. He has the potential to earn up to $2 million annually in performance bonuses based on innings pitched. However, the Blue Jays view Hoffman as the frontrunner for the closer role. He expressed his eagerness to compete for the position, stating, 'That's a big important job and that's definitely something that I want to be able to pitch myself into.' Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training on February 13 in Dunedin, Florida. The Blue Jays will begin their regular season on March 27 against the Orioles at Rogers Centre
