Marit Stiles pointed to joint surgeries being done by a private group of surgeons at the Riverside hospital as a symptom of underfunding.
Among concerns raised by critics of the partnership since it was announced last month is that Ottawa Hospital health workers have been approached about working for the group on Saturdays at rates higher than they earn in the public system. Registered nurses have been offered $750 per day, registered practical nurses have been offered $550 per day and clerical staff have been offered $600 a day.
“People do not understand why hospitals have to go to such lengths and work with for-profit clinics to be able to do what needs to be done,” she said. But Stiles and others say funding to pay staff more could allow operating rooms across the province that are sitting empty up to one-third of the time to be used as part of the public system.
On the other hand, provinces that allow private clinics to charge patients directly for virtual health care could see their future federal funding clawed back, as the government moved Friday to put an end to a proliferation of for-profit virtual care in Canada.
