2022 New vehicle preview — November 17, 2021

Though 2022 seems set to bring us back out to the world of auto shows, all has not returned to normal. Few would have guessed two years ago that we’d be seeing an industry that remains, in many ways, in turmoil. So while we’re looking, as with any auto show coverage, to the new and the exciting, it’s important that we also address the elephant in the car shopping world — a shortage of product.

For all the glitz and promise of automakers’ new product lines, shortages of superchips and other components have caused a worldwide shortage of cars. So while we plan to wow you with high horsepower and luxurious interiors, we will also be explaining why we’re facing this shortage, what’s being done about it, and how you can best navigate the showroom floor to get the best deal.

Whether EVs account for 30 per cent of the market share in 2030 or 50 per cent, it still represents a paradigm shift in the manufacture of automobiles. The important question for us, then, is how Canadians can get in on that revolution.

So far, all of the hype has surrounded battery-powered electric cars, while alternative solutions such as fuel cell vehicles had been thought to have been left behind. More recently, however, hydrogen has staged something of a comeback with many countries — of which Canada is one — investing in a future hydrogen economy. More importantly, at least to this discussion, is that numerous manufacturers have doubled down on hydrogen.Article contentroundtable.
