John Williams has conducted a new album of some of his most iconic movie themes with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter (mutterviolinne)
Schindler’s List“Anne-Sophie has brought new life to the pieces,” Williams tells. “A new point of view, a new way of hearing them, a new way of revealing whatever is in them.”
For her part, performing the exquisite pieces from the movie was an emotional experience. “The main theme and ‘Remembrances’ from are so heart-wrenching that in a concert it’s impossible to play anything else after either piece -- there’s simply nothing left to say," Mutter says. The pair first met nearly a decade ago after their mutual friend, the late conductor Andre Previn introduced them. Their first partnership was “Markings,” a piece Williams wrote for solo violin, strings and harp, which Mutter premiered in 2017 at the Tanglewood Music Festival.
Williams, who has won five Oscars, transformed his themes for Mutter. “Presented on the violin, they become a different emotional experience,” he said in a statement. For example, his newly arranged version of “Hedwig’s Theme” from thefilms, he and Mutter describe as “Harry Potter meets Paginini” and “a Carmen Fantasy for the 21st century.”
The pair will perform together Sept. 14 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Munich’s Königsplatz for an evening of all-Williams music. Across the Stars
