The 'progressive' in Progressive Conservative wasn’t some historic commitment to compromise with centre-left ideology

Even before the vote, a group called Centre Ice Conservatives formed to advance “pragmatic” policies, while respected party veteran Marjory LeBreton asserted that Poilievre’s tone and manner might split the party along old Progressive Conservative-Reform lines. The NP Comment newsletter from columnist Colby Cosh and NP Comment editors tackles the important topics with boldness, verve and wit. Ironically, at the same time, chronic mismanagement by centre-left governments caused economic crises throughout the developed world, sparking the Thatcher and Reagan revolutions. But in the dreamy Dominion, conservative reaction was muted. Significantly, the merger was too much for Clark. He actually rebuffed Harper’s offer of the fledgling party’s interim leadership and ultimately endorsed Liberal Leader Paul Martin in the 2004 election, confirming what many had suspected all along: that deep down, red Tories prefer Liberals to actual conservatives in their own party.

As for “progressive,” does this mean they support expanded government or buy into the whole post-modern, wokist mess? Or perhaps they mean that politics can be drained of ideology, with two centre-ish brokerage parties — let’s call them the “Red Team” and the “Blue Team” — solving problems on a case-by-case basis. This reflects the old Liberal-PC relationship in federal politics, which worked great — for one of them.

More recently, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s ground-breaking work on the psychological foundations of political belief suggests that, based on six fundamental dimensions of morality, traditionalists and libertarians have more potential public appeal than liberals. Similarly, Jordan Peterson quotes research linking two of the “big five” personality traits to political attitudes: greater openness for liberals and conscientiousness for conservatives.
