The BBC reported his death on Thursday morning. It follows his 50-year career with the corporation as one of its most distinguished sports broadcasters.
Known as “Motty” to his admirers, Motson was at the mic for 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals before he retired in 2018. He was honoured by BAFTA in 2018 with the Special Award. In 2001, he received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for his services to sports broadcasting. Motson commentated on almost 2,500 games and was known for his everyman style and excitability behind the microphone. His iconic sheepskin coat was another trademark.
