Opinion: Now, it is Poilievre who is attracting big crowds claiming that only he can give people back control of their lives, including putting home ownership…
It is a strong spot and it’s not surprising he is drawing large crowds of disaffected voters . He is selling freedom and control to people who feel they have been robbed of both. He is promising to fix the seemingly intractable problems that are plaguing them. And he’s not Justin Trudeau. In his video, he said a Poilievre government will stop the Bank of Canada from “printing cash that allows politicians to spend and the wealthy to borrow.
Is Poilievre really suggesting that giving people back control means handing him control of the central bank? But it is difficult to see how any federal politician can remove “gatekeepers” or reduce those costs. There are a multitude of taxes and charges that increase the price of a home and many are related to the provision of infrastructure like water and wastewater. In a number of provinces, those charges are demanded of the developer by the municipality and passed on to the buyer.
As such, Poilievre’s promise to remove gatekeepers and reduce government costs rings hollow. Federal paramountcy is one thing, but forcing provinces and municipalities to cut their own throats is quite another.Article content
