Conservative MP Michael Chong prepares to testify at the House of Commons procedure and house affairs committee on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for September 12, 2023 | SaltWireMichael Chong’s appearance before a congressional committee in Washington on the subject of Chinese foreign interference was a textbook case of a man trying not to criticize his own government while abroad, in the knowledge that he will make up for lost time when he gets home.
He said that “since the spring” the Liberal government has been standing up for him. “I think before that point in time, you know, there were issues that popped up, but they are now, like many other democracies, reacting to the threat,” Chong said. “The U.K. has just adopted a foreign-agents registry two months ago and the Canadian government has announced it will be introducing one, so democracies are often slow to react to the threat of authoritarian states.
“These tactics cannot be tolerated in a free and sovereign country. Canada must work more closely with democratic allies like the United States in countering Beijing’s efforts to interfere in our democratic life,” Chong concluded. But he also talked about combating repression by boycotting Chinese goods produced using forced Uyghur labour.
Chong said Canada would be a stronger partner to the U.S. if it could get more critical minerals and natural gas to markets. He said Canada needs regulatory reform to reduce the hurdles to build natural gas pipelines and liquid natural gas export terminals.
