Joe Thomas tackled Lake Erie's waters with the same energy he showed on the football field.

Topping off a limit of Lake Erie walleye for Joe Thomas is a hefty 10-pounder. CLEVELAND, Ohio — You realize right off the bat that going fishing with Joe Thomas isn’t just to have fun and hook up with a walleye or steelhead trout. The Hall of Fame left tackle took great pride in never missing a snap during his football career, despite toiling in the trenches for the Browns against the premier defensive players in the league.

Thomas became an instant fishing legend when he passed on attending the NFL Draft in New York on April 28, 2007, despite knowing he’d be a first-rounder, to go salmon and trout fishing on Lake Michigan with his father. When the Pro Bowl was held in Hawaii, Thomas booked hunting guides to be able to pursue wild boar and other exotic game animals.

We rounded up sandwiches and soft drinks, spinning tackle and a tub of nightcrawlers and headed for prime Lake Erie walleye waters near Pelee Island. Father and son are devoted anglers, and Thomas thoroughly enjoyed becoming the consummate walleye and steelhead trout fisherman after being drafted by the Browns. He relished having his dad join him on camera for a Lake Erie walleye fishing trip, but neither could hide their competitive spirit.
