Joe Jonas reflects on auditioning for TheAmazingSpiderMan 👀 'I remember years ago I was up for Spider-Man and I was so, so excited and it was the year Andrew Garfield got it. Obviously, he was the right one.'

Joe Jonas reveals he auditioned for the role of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, which went to Andrew Garfield. After Sam Raimi's successful trilogy of Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire, the franchise was rebooted five years later with a new face behind the mask. Garfield made his debut in the role in 2012, going on to portray Spider-Man again in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Despite Garfield's success as the hero, which has grown since his turn in Spider-Man: No Way Home, many others were considered for the part at the time, including Josh Hutcherson and apparently, singer/song-writer/actor Jonas.

I can name probably a couple [roles]. In the moment, you’re destroyed or you’re defeated. But you realize this person was brilliant. I remember years ago I was up for Spider-Man and I was so, so excited and it was the year Andrew Garfield got it. Obviously, he was the right one. But I remember that was a big thing at the time, going back for callbacks and the director used to be a music video director. So I was like, 'I got an in here.

While Jonas has some acting experience, he is more widely recognized for his musical career, though it's clear based on his description of the audition process that he hoped to expand his acting portfolio by branching out and seeking new projects. Taking on the role of Spider-Man would certainly have cemented Jonas as a movie star, but it's likely his turn as the superhero would have been criticized despite his acting skills.

Jonas' level of fame in 2012 would also have resulted in The Amazing Spider-Man being less immersive, since it would likely have been difficult for viewers to separate the pop star from the character of Peter. In addition, Jonas' busy schedule could have impeded the demanding filming process for the comic book movies, perhaps leading to a longer delay between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, or the sequel not even being made.
