Joe Biden’s online fundraising has tailed off, suggesting problems generating grassroots enthusiasm, a POLITICO review of millions of donations shows
Joe Biden raised $4.6 million online on his first day in the 2020 presidential race, surprising doubters who thought the former vice president couldn’t run a modern campaign. But since then Biden’s online fundraising has tumbled — looking more like flash-in-the-pan opponent Beto O’Rourke than top-tier rivals like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren.
POLITICO’s day-by-day review of presidential fundraising via ActBlue also shows that the former vice president didn’t generate other types of spikes or breakout moments that other campaigns feasted on during the first half of 2019. That includes well-received debate performances, televised town hall appearances, or even announcing support for impeaching President Donald Trump — all of which drove fundraising for other Democratic campaigns early this year.
“Biden has an enthusiasm gap that is making that difficult for him online,” one Democratic digital consultant said after reviewing Biden’s online fundraising. POLITICO analyzed more than 4 million contributions for the five top-polling candidates to see when the Democratic candidates were raising money, when they weren’t — and what that reveals about their campaigns for president. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, for example, was building a digital following in May and June after her campaign had a slow start in the late winter and spring.Warren’s campaign started the year slow: She raised only $396,000 on ActBlue on Feb.
In May, another town hall appearance by Buttigieg on Fox News — which was panned by some critics, who said Democratic presidential candidates shouldn’t appear on the conservative network — helped Buttigieg bring in $335,000 on May 20, the day after the town hall.The Buttigieg campaign has built a major fundraising operation while bypassing a common strategy of blitzing supporters with frequent emails, topped with urgent headlines such as “we’re worried” pleading for cash.
Sanders’ launch day online haul was the second-biggest after Beto O’Rourke, who pulled in slightly more — $5.5 million — on ActBlue when he entered the 2020 race.Biden entering the race was a boon for Sanders’ own fundraising: The Vermont senator netted $728,000 on ActBlue on April 25, the day the former vice president announced his 2020 campaign.
