Biden was joined onstage by candidates Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Julian Castro, Kirsten Gillibrand, Michael Bennet, Tulsi Gabbard, Jay Inslee, Bill de Blasio and Andrew Yang. Starting the debate with the same healthcare question posed at Tuesday’s debate, Biden defended an extension of former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act over Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for all, which he said would cost too much. But Harris said Biden’s proposal would exclude 10 million Americans as opposed to Sanders’ bill, which she said people could sign up to from day one., Biden said migrants who cross the border illegally “should have to get in line” unless they are seeking asylum.
Booker and Biden clashed over criminal justice reform, and Biden was also taken to task over the high rate of deportations under the Obama administration— questions that he was accused of dodging. “You invoke President Obama more than anybody else in this campaign. You can’t do it when it’s convenient, and dodge it when it’s not,” Booker told him. To De Blasio, who also challenged Biden on Obama’s deportation record, Biden said: “To compare him to Trump, I think, is absolutely bizarre.
