The amendments to the Employment Standards Regulation were announced in October and take effect on Jan. 1, 2023

They restrict certain jobs to those with a minimum age of 18, such as logging, working in smelters, drilling for oil or any job where there’s a risk of exposure to harmful materials.

The new age restrictions are based on data about annual injury rates in high-risk industries. While the average is 2.2 per 100 workers across all industries, construction framers are injured at a rate of 7.8 per 100. Workers in abattoirs are injured at a rate of 15.7 per 100 workers, and nearly one in five manual tree fallers and buckers are injured each year.
