Haynes will push the envelope.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Todd Haynes reveals new story details for his upcoming NC-17 film starring Joaquin Phoenix. Haynes, who recently directed the critically acclaimed May December, has helmed numerous high-profile films including Carol, Safe, and Far From Heaven. Haynes’s upcoming collaboration with Phoenix will be the pair’s first time working together with the title and release date for the film still under wraps.

In conversation with Variety, Haynes unveils new details surrounding the story of his upcoming gay romance film with Phoenix, who can be seen in the upcoming biopic Napoleon. According to Haynes, the film will be “a love story between two men set in the 30s that has explicit sexual content.” The two men in question are a corrupt LA cop and a Native American man.

It’s a love story between two men set in the 30s that has explicit sexual content that or at least it challenges you with the sexual relationship between these two men. One is a Native American character and one is a corrupt cop in LA. It’s set in the 30s. They have to flee L.A. ultimately and go to Mexico. But it’s a love story and with a strong sexual component. And what was so remarkable is that it all started with Joaquin having some ideas and some thoughts and just questions and images.

Making An NC-17 Rated Film Is A Rick For Haynes and Phoenix Haynes previously reported that the film was pushed to the NC-17 level under Phoenix’s influence. Making an NC-17 film will be a first for both Phoenix and Haynes. While Haynes has included graphic sexual scenes in his films, such as in 2015’s Carol, nothing has been as extreme as recently movies like Blonde which reached the NC-17 rating.

Pushing the “strong sexual component” of the film poses challenges for the gay romance film. The film is still in pre-production, so it could be challenging down the line to finance the film with adult-level content. NC-17 films also often have difficulty at the distribution level. Many theaters are hesitant to screen the films due to the explicit nature associated with NC-17 movies.
