Award-winning author Jenny Higgins has a way of addressing many levels of audience – Devilfish is both a learned picture book for adults and an animated reference book for kids – erudite and playful.

They swam across the pages of Jules Verne and Herman Melville novels. In any medium, they were fearsome and dangerous to ships and sailors. They had been seen and even caught on the Grand Banks , but in the “Decade of Devilfish,” they came to Newfoundland shores by the dozens. Perhaps no one was more personified in this than clergyman Moses Harvey, who wrote several books, “hundreds, if not thousands of essays and columns for local and international” publications, and whose curiosity, energy, and capability became indelibly associated with the giant squid.

In a still-stunning and beguiling portrait, the giant squid was photographed in his Victorian sponge bath, a session Higgins tracks in detail.Skipping ahead the person most associated with the giant squid in present day is Dr. Frederick Aldrich, who titled one of his lectures: “The ocean’s bottom is more interesting than the moon’s behind.”
