Joan Didion, who died last November at age 87, became a somewhat accidental style icon, so it's no surprise that her devotees gathered to view the writer's most quotidian belongings at Stair Galleries in Hudson, New York.

, from her 1979 book of the same name. With this famous Didionism in mind, it was fitting that the weather was unusually warm—perhaps a spiritual nod to Didion’s home state of California—on a Saturday morning in November when droves of Didion devotees and curious collectors arrived at Stair Galleries in Hudson, New York, to view and bid on 224 items from Joan Didion’s estate, from a set of orange Le Creuset cookware to the famous Julian Wassner photo of Didion standing by a Corvette Stingray.

Didion, who died last November at age 87, became a somewhat accidental style icon. Her minimalist packing list became a mainstay on Tumblr, and she starred in a campaign for Celine under Phoebe Philo’s tenure. She achieved the elusive goal of becoming a tastemaker without seeming like she was trying to at all. And now, her fans are looking to add a piece of the writer’s je ne sais quoi at the auction, which ends on Wednesday, November 16.

This idea can be seen in the specific possessions Thomas predicted would rack up the most bids. “The difference in monetary value versus bidding interest we see clearly,” She said. “Some of the fine art may be more valuable, but we only have 10 to 15 bids, and something like the sunglasses could have hundreds and hundreds.” The sunglasses in question are Celine faux tortoiseshell, which Thomas swears look good on everyone and which Didion wore for her turn as a campaign star for the brand.

Right as the doors opened at 11 a.m., friends and solo shoppers coolly buzzed into the auction house. On the way inside, people stopped to photograph the store’s front window displaying two 14-by-11-inch black-and-white portraits of Didion by Brigitte Lacombe, one where Didion’s face hides underneath her black turtleneck and the other where she appears to have just popped out, half smiling.
