Jimmy Haslam acknowledged that the pressure to win this year is “huge” – but stopped short of setting the bar at the playoffs or else.
Given that the Haslams gave Watson the first fully guaranteed contract in the NFL at $230 million over five years, they know they can’t miss the playoffs in his second season with the club at an average of $46 million a year. The first year of the blockbuster deal is already out the window because of Watson’s 11-game suspension, and Haslam indicated that missing the playoffs in 2023 is borderline unacceptable.“You have to realize this, Kevin just turned 40,” Haslam said. “Andrew is 35. Okay.
“I guess there are 32 teams that think their team’s going to win the Super Bowl,” Haslam said. “I can assure you this – from ownership to personnel to coaching to the support people in the building – nobody wants to win more than the group of people I just listed. Nobody works harder or cares more about it. I think we’ve made some good progress in the offseason, both in the coaching staff and with the team. And I think we’re all optimistic going into this year.
Haslam declined to comment on Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson asking Monday to be traded after not receiving a Watson-like fully-guaranteed contract offer. But the Browns don’t feel responsible for anyone’s hurt feelings for their perfectly legitimate decision to give Watson the fully-guaranteed contract. If they hadn’t done so, they probably wouldn’t have him, and they could still be in search of their franchise QB.
“Everybody understands that in the NFL it’s all about the quarterback,” Haslam said. “The Kansas City Chiefs have been to 3 of last 4 Super Bowls, won 2 of the last 3. Why? They got No. 15, right? So everybody understands the importance of quarterbacks. There’s a lot of really good young quarterbacks in the NFL. There’s a lot of really good young quarterbacks in the AFC.
