The Jim’s and Luby’s restaurants at Fredericksburg Road and Hillcrest Drive have been serving tortilla soup and LuAnn platters since the late 1960s.
It's rare you see a Luby 's customer serving the servers while sliding his tray through the cafeteria line. But there was Sam Kinsey on another Wednesday at the Luby 's at 4541 Fredericksburg Road, handing out little chocolate treats and receiving some big smiles. At 85, Kinsey has dined at the Balcones Heights location since it served its first LuAnn Platter in 1967. And we do mean first served.
These 4 San Antonio restaurants haven't changed in more than 50 years. And that's a good thing. But it's all the familiar foods and faces that give the restaurants their real character. That goes for Sunday breakfast after church, a Friday dinner on a payday or any other occasion any other day of the week. Kinsey usually hits Luby's on Fredericksburg every Monday and Wednesday for a turkey LuAnn Platter with spinach, and peas and carrots. 'I’m big on vegetables,' he said.

'Well, this is my home away from home,' Kinsey said. 'And this is as close to home cooking as I'm going to get.'
