Both San Diegans were part of the World Cup scene. Now they head local professional soccer franchises.
It wasn’t a surprise that the National Soccer Hall of Fame has decided to enshrine Jill Ellis, the San Diego Wave Futbol Club president who led the U.S. women’s national team to World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019.
Joining Ellis in the Class of 2023 is a fellow San Diegan whose election was announced last week: Landon Donovan, the San Diego Loyal coach and executive who set scoring records with the U.S. national team and in Major League Soccer. The Hall’s incoming class — including former national team players DaMarcus Beasley and Lauren Cheney Holiday — will be inducted May 6 in Frisco, Texas.
Before coaching the national team, she was the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Women’s Development Director for six years. As UCLA’s coach she won six consecutive conference titles.
