Republican presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis traveled the country this year, telling crowds that his state “is where woke goes to die.”DeSantis wraps up 1st early states tour as candidate with more personal touch in South CarolinaIn my opinion, a person who is woke at this time is an educated, courageous, non-racist person.
Some woke people who walked the Earth in earlier times are Jesus, Gandhi, Dorothy Day, Cesar Chavez and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And there are many others.," : Paul Krugman hit the nail on the head when he described Texas voters who suffer from"anti-woke mind virus" as folks who make decisions based on a mindset that places illogical bias over practical realities.
It started with campaign rhetoric by Texas Republicans calling all Democrats socialists who will take away your guns, your liberty and your pursuit of anything that makes you happy. According to those politicians, no matter how much you might agree with the Democrats' stance on funding for education, expanded health care, stricter environmental protections, a vote for him or her will lead you to becoming a dastardly liberal.
These same folks often live in areas where hospitals have been shut down, where their kids are having to be bused to a high school that is miles away because the school district does not have the funds to keep a local school open, where nearby fracking has compromised their water supply and made their livestock sick. They need better access to health care, more school funding from the state, better controls over their own environment but then eschew all of that at the ballot box.
These people have been voting against their own best interests for years. Not to belabor the verb, but it is time for these Texans to wake up.
