\u0027It’s an example of what goes wrong when one company has far too much power,\u0027 said the man who has never met a government monopoly he didn’t like
If Canada hopes to make real progress in creating a more competitive market among cellular and internet service providers , we need to scrap foreign ownership restrictions and other government policies that stand in the way of new players entering the market. Just don’t expect that to happen any time soon — at least not while the Liberals and NDP hold the balance of power in Ottawa.
These, of course, are relatively minor inconveniences. More serious was the impact it had on 911 call centres and hospitals in some areas. Nevertheless, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh seemed intent on adding a heaping tablespoon of hyperbole to the situation, when “It’s an example of what goes wrong when one company has far too much power,” continued Singh, a man who has never met a government monopoly he didn’t like . Though he erroneously referred to Canada’s telecom market as a “monopoly,” rather than an oligopoly, he correctly stated that “the vast majority of all cellular and data services and internet services are owned by just three companies” — Rogers, Telus and Bell.the Shaw takeover.
