Logan Gallant of the Charlottetown Islanders, right, holds his glove up after slapping a tag on Josh Forrest of the Sydney Sooners on a play at the plate during action at the Baseball Canada Senior Men's National Championship at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Park in Sydney. The tournament marked the first time the senior tournament was ever held in Cape Breton. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST.
Despite the fact the Sooners didn’t win the game and were blanked 1-0 by the Prince Edward Island team, the result on the field wasn’t how they judged the game but rather recognized the quality of baseball played. Maybe it’s because it’s the summer and people want to get out and enjoy the weather, or maybe it’s because of the rich baseball history in Cape Breton; if one thing is certain, Capers love baseball.
One could argue the reason for the large crowds for that tournament was due to the fact Cape Breton played in the final. While it’s understandable there would be more interest when a local team is playing, the bigger picture is the sport itself is popular and people are willing attend tournament games to watch good baseball.
Speaking with several people in the community while covering the games, a good portion of the fans didn’t have any connection to the players on the field but were rather there supporting their teams as baseball fans in general. For the time being, the weather was looking good for the Labour Day weekend. What better way to spend the weekend, if you don’t already have plans, than to support local baseball players chasing their dreams of winning a provincial title?
