Minnesota just outlawed marital rape but some states still exempt some forms of spousal sexual assault
In 2017, Jenny Teeson discovered a video her husband secretly recorded of him sexually assaulting her while she was unconscious. Their four-year-old child lay next to them on the bed. Teeson took the video to the police and prosecutors filed assault charges against her husband. Then things began to unravel.
According to the National Women’s Law Center, a nonprofit that provides resources for victims of domestic violence, marital rape “might still be treated different than non-spousal rape” depending on the jurisdiction. AEquitas tracks legislation at the state and federal level to provide activists and legislators with a clearer picture of the legal roadblocks to full criminalization of marital rape. According to the group’s 2014 report, some form of marital exemption or higher standard for prosecution still exists in a handful of states.
