The country is more divided than it has been in a long time
There were a lot of people who were very happy about this, yet it is impossible for me to be happy about something that caused this much division and frustration. The divisions in this country could not be more clear, yet there are many Liberal supporters, spurred by the prime minister himself, who turn a blind eye to the tensions in this country and dismiss the concerns of those who feel abandoned by this government.
I remember talking to a friend of mine who lives in an isolated northern community in Saskatchewan. She told me that she had no desire to listen to what the government wanted her to do. This was an Indigenous woman with a distaste for western science, backed by historical and real grievances with the way government has treated our people.
And that’s the thing: every single Canadian entered the pandemic with different circumstances and different views on how they wanted it to be handled and how they expected their fellow Canadians to react. Suddenly, our big old country that celebrates diversity was expected to be entirely the same on one driving issue.Article content
It wasn’t long before you couldn’t log onto social media and see the clear and evident divide that was cutting through the population. We had a whole group of people who felt extremely comfortable telling other Canadians they should be prevented from accessing services, stripped of their health care and everything in between. A government that has pledged to crack down on online bullying was making it acceptable for Canadians to harass their neighbours for making a different medical choice.
