Atlanta Falcons OL Jeff Van Note on bench during game vs. St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Jeff Van Note, a longtime Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman and a member of the franchise's Ring of Honor, has died, "We mourn the loss of a true Falcons legend," said Atlanta Falcons owner and chairman Arthur Blank in a statement.
"Jeff Van Note dedicated 18 seasons to this franchise and became one of the most respected and beloved players in our history. He embodied toughness, resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his team, qualities that earned him the admiration of generations of Falcons fans.
"Jeff's contributions to this organization cannot be measured solely by his accomplishments on the field. He helped shape the identity of the Atlanta Falcons and left a legacy that will endure for years to come. We are grateful for everything he meant to this franchise and our community.
" After playing collegiately at the University of Kentucky, Van Note was selected in the 11th round of the 1969 NFL Draft by Falcons. Originally a linebacker, he was moved to center by head coach Norm Van Brocklin and became the team's starter at the position a season later. The move paid off as Van Note became one of the NFL's best offensive lineman.
His play earned him six trips to the Pro Bowl and he was a two-time Second-team All-Pro in 1979 and 1982. He missed only four games in his entire 18-year career and started 225 of 246 games. After retiring in 1986, Van Note worked as a commentator for various teams including the Falcons and Kentucky Wildcats, as well as appearing on radio broadcasts.
