Jean Lacy, Dallas visual artist, is pictured April 1, 1998 at St. Luke's Community United Methodist Church, where she made these stained glass pieces. Lacy's collages, mixed media pieces and stained glass windows are steeped in Black history, civil rights movement, spirituality, mysticism and borrow from several traditions: African, Byzantine, European.
As I wrote of the 2009 Tyler show, “Embracing both African roots and hip-hop stars, mothers and warriors, leaders and migrations, Lacy’s art radiates the kind of power we associate with religious totems and icons. It finds beauty, mystery and magic even in the poverty of the urban North and rural South.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1932, Lacy soon felt the influence of the Harlem Renaissance, a flowering of African American literature, music, dance and visual arts during the 1920s and ‘30s. With a degree in art education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, she taught in Louisiana schools and continued her own education at the Art Students League of New York, the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and North Texas State University .
Her annual holiday gatherings brought together people from different walks of Dallas to a home filled with, as Brettell wrote, “thousands of dolls, ceramic jugs, plastic toys, figurines, mammies and countless other popular artifacts representing African-American life.” These were the inspiration — and often the stuff — of her artistic creations.
In recent years, following the 19th-century example of the French artist Paul Sérusier, Lacy painted cigar boxes as “shrines.”
