If you’ve ever congregated at the altar of SoulCycle or danced the ritual Zumba, thank Jazzercise, a pioneer of group fitness.
One half-century ago, in 1969, a Northwestern graduate and professional dancer by the name of Judi Sheppard Missett taught a dance class just outside Chicago. She noticed a pattern of inconsistent attendance — dancers would attend a handful of classes at a time and then drop out. This concerned Missett, who began asking them why. They told her they didn’t want tolike dancers and were interested in her class as a workout.
My mom is the best person in the world. In addition to driving me to school, picking me up, helping me pack my swim bag, finding my goggles when I lost them, and emotionally cultivating three other siblings and one husband, my mom taught Jazzercise. Every two months or so, Jazzercise HQ would choreograph and record new routines, and then mail out VHS recordings of the updated classes, which my mom would study and learn anywhere and everywhere there was open space in our home.
My mom sets up her equipment, talks to the early arrivals, and then proceeds to blow the fucking roof off this Cleveland gym, with a devastating combination of low-impact calisthenics and the music of Ed Sheeran. In 2004, the fitness public became aware of Curves founder Gary Heavin's perspective on abortion. “I like Curves a lot, but I love women’s rights more,” one Bay Area woman told theBy 2014, more than half of Curves franchises had reportedly closed as the company failed to weather the fitness boom. In Cleveland, it appears some Curves gyms still exist, despite my mom confidently informing me they had “died out.” Her business has triumphed over Curves.
Attending Jazzercise also restored my mom’s confidence after it was demolition-style razed by an instructor who told her early on that she did not have what it took to enter the training program. If I have not been clear enough, my mother is not perfect, but she is pretty close and can only be faulted for mispronouncing certain words.
