. Utah was perfectly content with keeping Gobert. He was in the opening stages of a long-term contract. He was happy in Utah. He is in the prime of his career. But the Timberwolves offered effectively five first-round picks and three starting-level rotation players. And that’s not including guardMitchell’s situation is different than Gobert’s on multiple fronts. Gobert probably would have retired in a Jazz uniform if given the opportunity.
To this point, Mitchell has not formally asked out, according to multiple league sources. The Jazz have maintained that they wish to keep him, build around him and have him be the focal point of their franchise moving forward. Mitchell wants to win at a high level, which is an obstacle here. With or without Mitchell, Gobert’s trade likely means the Jazz will take a step back for at least next season, and that step could be significant.
Basketball has become a business, and player movement has become the fabric of the league. So, from Mitchell’s perspective, he will be 26 years old in September.
