A fossilized chunk of jawbone found on China's Tibetan plateau once belonged to a Denisovan, a mysterious ancient relative of Neanderthals.

A virtual reconstruction of the jawbone found in a Chinese cave. Scientists reported Wednesday that the fossil once belonged to a Denisovan, a member of an extinct species that was closely related to Neanderthals.

The find addresses several mysteries. One was why the Denisovans’ DNA indicated they were adapted to living at high altitudes when the Siberian cave was relatively close to sea level. The Chinese cave holding the jawbone, by contrast, is on the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, about 10,800 feet high.of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, one of the paper's authors.

The discovery also provides new anatomical details that can be compared to other fossils from China, some of which are"good candidates for being Chinese Denisovans," Hublin said.Other experts agreed the fossil could help identify other remains as Denisovan.of the University of Toronto, who was not involved with the new study.
