It\u0027s difficult to imagine any Canadian prime minister subjecting themselves to this level of scrutiny
Johnson, who swept to a majority government in late 2019 after promising to “Get Brexit done,” spent the last few months battling a growing list of scandals. His premiership was seriously wounded in May by a damning investigation conducted by senior civil servant Sue Gray after reports of various parties taking place at government offices in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 30, Conservative MP and deputy chief whip Chris Pincher was forced to resign after the Sun newspaper reported allegations he had groped two men at the Carlton Club, a private member’s club long associated with the Conservative party. By July 1, Pincher was ejected from the Tory caucus, with Johnson’s staff insisting the prime minister had been unaware of previous sexual misconduct allegations against Pincher made prior to his appointment as deputy chief whip.
Shortly thereafter, Johnson showed up to the House of Commons’ Liaison Committee to answer questions from MPs. For two hours, the prime minister faced a series of questions from MPs — many of whom urged him to resign — and at times even strayed into meaningful discussion over his next steps.
But it’s difficult to imagine any Canadian prime minister subjecting themselves to this level of scrutiny — or more than one or two of their own backbenchers having the nerve to put them through it. Yet in the U.K., thanks to powerful parliamentary committees, less centralized control and a much stronger tradition of ministerial accountability, that’s exactly what happened.
