Now that the door is open to a probable delay in the Summer Olympics because of the coronavirus pandemic, Japan is hoping to keep it short

Leaders in Tokyo took in stride the announcement by the International Olympic Committee that it may postpone the Games, describing it as inevitable and expressing reassurance that there will be an Olympics in Tokyo in the not-too-distant future.

President Trump, who earlier suggested a one-year delay, tweeted on Monday, “We will be guided by the wishes of Prime Minister Abe,” and added, “He will make the proper decision!” On an online forum, people who bought condominiums in the complex wondered whether they could get their deposits back if they canceled. The deposits could be tens of thousands of dollars.

The current plan calls for buyers to move into their units in early 2023 after further construction, a timeline that now may have to be pushed back. The official budget for the Olympics is $12.6 billion, which covers the cost of building new facilities for the Games and upgrading existing ones, and operational expenses for the tournament. Prof. Miyamoto’s estimates don’t include these costs.
