A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Monday, prompting a tsunami advisory that was later lifted. The quake, initially estimated at magnitude 6.9, was centered in Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu . While no major damage was immediately reported, a one-meter tsunami reached land within 30 minutes of the quake, according to reports. The waters detected at Miyazaki Port measured 20 centimeters high.
Tsunami advisories were issued for Miyazaki and nearby Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku Island, but were all called off before midnight. Residents in some coastal areas were warned to evacuate as a precaution. One man in Kyushu suffered minor injuries after falling down some stairs. The quake, which struck at 9:19 p.m., had a depth of 30 kilometers and shook a wide area in Kyushu. NHK TV footage showed moving traffic and well-lit streets, indicating that power remained operational. No problems were detected at nuclear plants in the region. Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location on the 'Ring of Fire,' an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. Experts met late Monday to assess the potential connection between the recent temblor and the Nankai Trough quakes, but decided not to take any extraordinary measures for now. The Nankai Trough refers to a region prone to major quakes, with a 1946 quake off Shikoku killing over 1,300 people. The area experienced a 7.1 magnitude quake in August last year.
